Fund Development and Grantwriting for Zach’s Toy Chest

The Cause

Zach’s Toy Chest donates toys, games, books and other essential items that help boost the spirits of patients of all ages receiving cancer treatment at North Carolina hospitals.  A well stocked toy chest ensures all patients have a gift for the holidays, birthdays, end of treatment parties and most importantly, a little something to serve as a reward for their courage in fighting childhood cancer.   We are 100% volunteer run and currently provide year round donations to Duke Children’s Hospital, UNC Children’s Hospital and The Brody School of Medicine’s Outpatient Hematology-Oncology clinic in NC.

The Challenge

We are rapidly growing and have a need to expand the nonprofit in order to continue to keep up with the demand at the hospitals as we are the only group that donates year-round.  There are just under 800 children a week at Duke and UNC combined that are seen for a form of childhood cancer and are there receiving treatment.  At the stage our nonprofit is currently at, we are not able to keep up with the demand from the hospitals we currently serve.  We would also like to expand to a children’s hospital in the Charlotte area and then could service the entire state of NC.  We need to continue to grow and keep up with the demand at local NC hospitals.  We need the support of funders and the general public, along with assistance in finding suitable grant funding through local foundations.

End Result

The project will result in the following deliverables:

  • A Fund Development strategic plan for 1-3 year period.
  • 10 recommendations for untapped fundraising resources, up to 5 of which can be recommendations for new grant sources that align with the organization’s needs.
  • A grant proposal with up to one round of revisions the organization can submit for funding and re-use for future grant applications.

Impact

This will be a game changer for us because it will allow us to purchase and donate enough toys and other essentials the hospitals need so that every child receiving treatment for childhood cancer will be able to get a ‘something special’ for their courage in fighting cancer in North Carolina.  Currently the demand is much higher than what we can supply without additional funds.  We cannot continue to grow unless there are more donations that allow us to take care of these kids.

Grantwriting for the Helps Education Fund

The Cause

The Helps Education Fund (HEF) is dedicated to supporting educators and improving learning outcomes for students. To promote student success, HEF provides research-supported materials and services to teachers and parents, and to promote educational equity, we offer additional support to schools serving a high percentage of students who live in conditions of poverty. A fundamental goal of the Helps Education Fund is to use collaborative partnerships between researchers and practitioners to develop and evaluate critically needed teaching tools (e.g., reading and math intervention programs) and provide those tools and services for free or at the lowest possible costs to educators.

The Challenge

As this tiny, historically volunteered-led non-profit transitions into a full-fledged organization with a full time Executive Director, we are in need of establishing a more systematic approach to fundraising and grantwriting. Strengthening our fundraising abilities is crucial to our sustainability and growth, so we are able to continue to provide effective educational programs to teachers and students.  As our new ED focuses on multiple priorities to strengthen organizational systems and program impact, we seek an experienced Development professional to us help identify and prioritize grants and funding strategies. To support the goals of our strategic plan, we will need a comprehensive and achievable fundraising / grant writing plan.

Impact

Having a Development professional work with the Helps Education Fund (HEF) will be a game changer for our organization. As the HEF grows and develops a solid operating system, it is crucial we create a successful grant writing system. Over the years HEF has secured funding from a few foundations and grants, however we are at a pivotal point in needing to become more successful with identifying ‘good fit’ funding streams and submitting applications that support our goals. To have expertise in grant development in 2016, will allow us to make tremendous gains in moving our organization forward –ultimately achieving a greater impact for struggling learners.

Grantwriting for the Carying Place

The Cause

The Carying Place teaches homeless, working families life skills for attaining independent living while providing short-term housing and support services to address each family’s individual needs. Our 4-month program currently works with 8 families in our 8 agency owned or rented units, benefiting approximately 20 families per year. Under the direction of our Program Manager, we match trained adult volunteers with program participants to teach, to encourage, and to celebrate growth in family management and planning skills.  The training is provided at weekly meetings over a 16 week period, during which the various service professionals from the community volunteer their time to develop essential elements of modern day living.

The Challenge

The Carying Place’s greatest challenge is obtaining a consistent source of funding at a level that would allow us agency growth and to manage more families and housing properties for families. We currently have donors and funds from all areas (individuals, corporate sponsors, businesses, religious/civic groups, government/regular grants, special events/fundraisers, etc.) but are in need of a better comprehensive list of grant opportunities and the professional help needed to locate and apply for such grants. We would like a professional grant writer to help us create a grant calendar and assist with identifying and writing a grant.

This would be a game changer for us! Having a grant writer assist us would improve our funding sources exponentially. This would not only increase our agency’s longevity and sustainability, but would allow us to develop a professional template for future grant applications. This would streamline the grant application process, and ensure that we do not miss out on grant opportunities. Ultimately, this would allow us to better serve more families and increase our reach to eventually exterminate homelessness in the Triangle area.

Grantwriting for Sustainable Alamance

The Cause

The mission of Sustainable Alamance is to use bold and innovative thinking and community development approaches to connect those members of the community facing employment discrimination and resulting in generational poverty to local economic resources. Our vision is to build a stronger and more sustainable community, not only by promoting wise use of local natural and economic resources, but by identifying, developing and including underutilized human resources that are effectively prevented from participating in the local economy. Sustainable Alamance was founded by Phil Bowers in 2008 after he learned that previously incarcerated men and women in our community face steep, and sometimes seemingly insurmountable, barriers to employment. Inspired by this startling fact, Phil began to think about how we as a community can change these negative perceptions, and he created Sustainable Alamance to help those community members with criminal records restart their lives in productive and meaningful ways.

The Challenge

We are a very small organization with only two full-time staff members, neither of which has any formal training in grantwriting. We seek the advice and consultation on this matter so that we can identify grant opportunities best suited for the work we do as well as ensuring our projects and proposals are communicated in an effective manner. The opportunity to work with an Activate Good “Pro Hero” is more pressing than ever for Sustainable Alamance because we are now being recognized and sought out as the “go-to” agency for re-entry services. We would like a professional grant writer to evaluate our current grant writing practices, identify strengths and weaknesses of said practices and propose strategies for better identifying grants and increasing likelihood of being awarded future grants.

Impact

This project would have a significant impact on our ability to serve the community. As previously mentioned, we have a very small staff and thus time is a commodity we never seem to have enough of. By having the guidance of a professional grant writer we would have a more strategic foundation for fundraising, both in terms of time spent on identifying and completing grant applications as well as income generated from discovered grant opportunities. Furthermore, we have a major project that we have identified but are unsure of the best way to seek funding. The consultation of a grant writing professional would mean a fundamental shift in our organization and  would put us in a better position to guarantee the financial diversity and sustainability of our organization.
