Web Development for Learning Together

Learning-Together-w:slogan-2c

The Cause

Learning Together’s mission is to meet the developmental, educational, and health needs of young children of all abilities.  We believe in pursuing and nurturing inclusion, diversity, integrity, quality, interdependency, and innovation in our daily operations. Through this pursuit, Learning Together’s vision is to create a Community of Promise – where children of all abilities are able to reach their full potential with the support of their community and families.

The Challenge

We are a smaller nonprofit but we have some great, unique services we provide for kids and families in Wake County looking for inclusion. Our website was built on the Drupal platform, and our staff struggles with keeping it up to date and building new pages and features. We would like to work with a web designer who can help us design and launch a WordPress website and then teach us how to operate and update it properly.

The Project: Web Development

Estimated Volunteer Time (Now – April 30):

36-39 hours

See Scope of Work / Project Steps Show

End Result

The project will result in the following deliverables:

  • WordPress site with basic WordPress features (blog, pages, contact, social media buttons, etc.)
  • Integration and set-up of up to 3 additional plug ins specific to Learning Together’s needs (Ex: special forms, commerce, etc.)
  • Host a training workshop (no longer than 2 hours)for staff and select volunteers on how to utilize and update the WordPress site and its features

Impact

This project will raise our profile in the Triangle among both donors and families in need of early childhood services, which would give us more stability for our existing programs and families. We offer extremely high quality services to the families we reach, but we don’t usually reach them through our website. It’s 2015, it’s more than time for that to be a given. We also have some unique perspectives and information about topics like inclusion that we lead our field in, and being able to share that on our website with anyone with an internet connection would help us share our mission beyond our classroom walls.

Furniture Repair Consultation for TROSA, Inc.

trosa

The Cause

TROSA is an innovative, multi-year residential program that enables substance abusers to be productive, recovering individuals by providing comprehensive treatment, work-based vocational training, education, and continuing care. TROSA accepts substance abusers into their program on one condition, they must have a strong desire to change their lives. TROSA’s program elements include vocational training, education, counseling, mentoring, leadership training, and continuing care.

The Challenge

TROSA opened its Thrift Store one year ago, and the store has generally been a success. The key to any Thrift operation is receiving a steady stream of quality donations, which TROSA is able to do thanks to its moving company. TROSA Thrift Store’s challenge is that it needs high level skills to repair damaged furniture and complete professional level cleaning and polishing. We know that we could increase store traffic, sales, and price per piece if we were able to do more repairs, professional cleaning. We need a professional who can consult our leadership and volunteers on how to assess and maintain furniture quality, create an operations guide for furniture maintenance, and train our team on vital processes.

The Project: Furniture Repair Consultation and Training

Estimated Volunteer Time (Now through April 30):

28-32 hours

See Scope of Work / Project Steps Show

End Result

The project will result in the following deliverables:

  • A repair shop operation guide (up to 5 pages) including safety guidelines and basic instructions for furniture repair.
  • A furniture quality assessment guide (up to 2 pages).
  • Up to 3 hours of training and electronic copies of any training materials used for the organization’s future use.

Impact

This project would have a huge impact on both the individuals that would be mentored as well as the organization as a whole. TROSA’s focus on vocational training is often at the level of “basic skills” and we would love to see more advanced training made available to our residents, which would improve their own skills, knowledge, and ability to succeed when they leave the TROSA program. The project also has the potential to positively impact the store in many ways. If we are able to do more repairs and a higher quality of repair, we will be able to increase our volume of sales, increase our price points on furniture, and reduce waste through a reduction of items that must be scrapped (at a cost to TROSA). Further, if this becomes profitable enough, we may be able to justify opening additional stores in the future, providing another strong revenue source for the organization while providing a higher quality of vocational training for residents.

Human Resources Consultation for Benevolence Farm

BF-Logo-Header

The Cause

The mission of Benevolence Farm is to provide an opportunity for women leaving prison to live and work on a farm where they grow food, nourish self, and foster community and to create a more equitable, just, and nurturing world for women and communities they transform.

The Challenge

In the last year and a half, Benevolence Farm has acquired a team of staff members, however our HR policies and procedures are lacking. We would like a human resources professional to evaluate our current HR system, help us flesh out and add structure to our policies and procedures, and create a more comprehensive employee handbook for the organization.

The Project: Human Resources Consultation

Estimated Volunteer Time (Now through April 30):

19-25 hours

See Scope of Work / Project Steps Show

End Result

The project will result in the following deliverables:

  • 1-2 page document recommending structural improvements, policy and procedure improvements
  • An action plan and timeline with steps to make these improvements
  • A comprehensive employee handbook

Impact

This project would make a significant impact on our ability to serve our community/residents! Enhancing and implementing our human resource policies and procedures will provide security, structure, and communication among a team of dedicated, hard-working staff who often work independently from one another in varying aspects of the organization. In addition, the time, energy, and resources this will save our staff can be utilized in fundraising efforts which are crucial as we work to open our doors to residents in April 2016. Taking excellent care of our employees is a priority and having sustainable infrastructure in place will benefit the entire organization now and well into the future.

Graphic Design for the National Inclusion Project

National Inclusion Project

The Cause

The National Inclusion Project serves to bridge the gap that exists between young people with disabilities and the world around them. We partner with communities and out-of-school-time programs (YMCAs, Boys & Girls Clubs, Kid’s Museums, Community Centers, Zoos, etc) to enable them to include children with disabilities in ALL of their activities. We work every day to make the inclusion of children with disabilities a reality because no child should sit on the sidelines.

The Challenge

In January 2015, we strategically solidified our organization’s case statement, quantified our impact and started pulling together all of our results and information in order to go after new grants, sponsors and donors. While this is great information, much of it is not in our 4-year old brochure/booklet. Not only is the brochure out of date, but the current format is way too long and very expensive to mail. We need a graphic designer to create a concise, informative, and compelling brochure and infographic that we can use to promote our cause.

The Project: Graphic Design

Estimated Volunteer Time (Now – April 30):

30-38 hours

See Scope of Work / Project Steps Show

End Result

The project will result in the following deliverables:

  • An organization brochure in print ready and online formats, including the editable file for future changes /revisions to be made by the organization
  • Infographic highlighting the organization’s results and impacts in print ready and online formats

Impact

This project will have a significant impact on our ability to serve the community! This project will be of great help in getting the word out about the importance of inclusion and the benefits of partnering with the National Inclusion Project. We hope this will in turn garner more interest and more dollars so that we can serve more organizations and families in the future.

Social Media Planning for PLM Families Together

PLM Families Together

The Cause

PLM Families Together helps homeless families reach independence by providing housing and supportive services. It is our hope that by advocating for families to receive adequate and affordable housing, as well as offering ongoing support to these families, we will help them avoid entering a situation of homelessness again. We work with volunteers in meaningful ways to carry out the mission of the agency and enhance the experience of families participating in PLM Families Together programs.

The Challenge

Our agency is a leader in our field, however we struggle to leverage social media in a way that makes us a leader in the conversation about homelessness in Wake County. We need a detailed plan that helps us to grow our community of supporters and provide engaging and relevant web content that helps to position PLM Families Together as a powerful voice in the fight against homelessness.

The Project: Social Media Planning

See Scope of Work / Project Steps Show

End Result

The project will result in the following deliverables:

  • A 1-2 page assessment summarizing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges of the organization’s existing social media efforts, as well as recommended best practices for growing a social media following for the organization and proposed social media tools / systems.
  • A 1-2 year social media strategic plan document complete with goals, objectives, action steps, deadlines, and owners.
  • Up to 2 1-hour training workshop for organization staff and volunteers (if desired) on social media tactics that will help meet the organization’s goals as laid out in the strategic plan.

Impact

This project would be a game changer for our organization! Having a better handle on how we can leverage our social media to more effectively tell our story and bring attention to the problems of homelessness will allow our agency to better position ourselves as a leader not only in practice but also in thought. Social media gives us the opportunity to support our financial goals and meet our engagement goals, at a low cost to us. To a small non-profit that strives to keep administrative and fundraising costs down so that funds can go directly to families, we believe social media is one of the most important keys to helping us grow and expand our work.

Web Development for Loaves and Fishes

Loaves-and-Fishes

The Cause

The mission of Loaves and Fishes is to empower low-income K-12 youth and their families to overcome individual challenges in order to achieve healthier and more fulfilling lives. We accomplish this through out-of-school programming using a long-term, relationally-based, holistic approach to development that involves enrichment of the mind, body and spirit. We strategically collaborate with schools, non-profits and other community organizations to provide critical support to the youth and families we serve.

The Challenge

Loaves and Fishes has an existing website that includes the ability to submit generic donations. We have increasingly had opportunities for people to assist us by making purchases at or through partner organizations. This is labor intensive and requires us to impose on Board members, staff and volunteers for activities that are relatively low-return individually but could have nice returns if handled electronically. We would like a web-development professional to work with us in modifying our current website to allow for our staff to enter promotional opportunities that require order taking, payment and fulfillment.

The Project: Web Development

Estimated Volunteer Time (Now – April 30):

31-34 hours

See Scope of Work / Project Steps Show

End Result

The project will result in the following deliverables:

  • Integration and set-up of up of a commerce / online shop plug-in on the website that allows the organization to showcase items for sale, accept and track orders, payments, and shipments.
  • Host a training workshop (no longer than 2 hours) for staff and select volunteers on how to utilize the commerce / online shop plug-in.

Impact

This completed project would have an impact on our ability to raise funds from non-traditional sources in the near term and a more significant impact in the future as we become more creative in finding similar opportunities. By addition of these capabilities, new fundraising opportunities will be available and the time of Board members and volunteers can be directed to community relations, service delivery in support of our mission, and strategic activities.

Videography for Marbles Kids Museum

marbles

The Cause

Marbles Kids Museum is a hands-on, minds-on museum that inspires imagination, discovery and learning through extraordinary adventures in play and larger-than-life IMAX experiences. Museum exhibits are designed for children 10 and under, and the Wells Fargo IMAX Theatre on campus caters to adults and children with a complete calendar of feature and documentary films.

The Challenge

Marbles Kids Museum is an extremely visual and high-energy environment with an infinite number of moving and captivating moments perfect for video and photography. However as a nonprofit organization, with tight operating capital, we do not have the resources to professionally capture those moments. As such, we have relied primarily on the generosity of local professionals, students and amateurs for our video and photo content.

In particular, with an ever increasing number of school groups visiting the museum we have a need to be more efficient in our museum operations to create a better overall experience for those groups and for the overall population of visitors. We’d like to create a short tutorial/educational video for school group visitors that can be hosted on our website and viewed by school teachers, students and chaperones prior to their visit. We believe this will better prepare each group for their visit and create an improved experience for all guests visiting Marbles Kids Museum.

The Project: Videography

Estimated Volunteer Time (Now – April 30): 32-44 hours

See Scope of Work / Project Steps Show

End Result

The project will result in the following deliverables:

  • A fully edited short tutorial / educational video (no longer than 10 minutes) for school group visitors
  • A quality b-roll of play in the existing exhibits for future promotions

Impact

This project would have a significant impact within our organization to include a better internal staff experience, but more importantly a better overall customer experience for the school groups and other museum visitors. This project could help to promote our school visits, at the same time allowing us to serve a larger number of school visitors without a negative impact to the museum’s operations and overall guest experience.

We believe, based on our Educator Advisory feedback, that a tutorial video on school group visitation would greatly enrich the visit for our school groups. In addition, we believe that the video will help streamline school group visits, which has a positive impact on our staff and our non-school group guests. An improved visitor experience could ultimately lead to an increase in field trips, general visitation and a higher-caliber Marbles experience.
