Volunteer Program Planning for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

st-jude-logo1

The Cause

The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures and means of prevention for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment while honoring the memory and heritage of our founder, Danny Thomas. We are leading the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer.

The Challenge

We are based in Charlotte, NC and control the fundraising in North and South Carolina that supports the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We do not have the connections needed to grow a successful walk/run in the Raleigh Area. We would like a professional to work with us in creating a committed team of volunteers that can help us plan and secure sponsorships for a Raleigh area run/walk.

The Project: Volunteer Program Planning

Estimated Volunteer Time (Now through April 30):

28-30 hours

See Scope of Work / Project Steps Show

End Result

The project will result in the following deliverables:

  • Updated volunteer leadership team job descriptions suited to the local community (the Triangle).
  • A volunteer outreach plan including proposed demographic targets for volunteers needed, strategies for outreach, and outreach language for each target population.
  • A list of possible targets and target populations for recruiting to fill these volunteer roles.
  • Completed outreach and connections to organization staff.

Impact

The impact this person or people could have to our organization is huge! We are working so hard to connect to the Raleigh area and spread the awareness of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We need someone to spread the message and mission that is well connected with Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and surrounding areas. If we can plan for and recruit a volunteer team that is committed to our mission we know that we will be able to hold a successful event in the Raleigh area, raising much needed funds and awareness for St. Jude and the children we serve.

Volunteer Program Planning for 4 Philip Dot Org

4philip

The Cause

Founded in 2010, 4 Philip was the dream of founder Eric Hart as a memorial to his late son, Philip who died unexpectedly on November 7, 2009 from an undiagnosed case of Addison’s disease. Since that time Eric has raised more than $20,000 to support research at Duke Children’s Hospital. 4Philip dot Org is North Carolina’s only non-profit organization promoting research and a cure for Addison’s disease. Our vision is to make sure that life saving medication is widely available for those suffering from adrenal shock and to fund research into the causes and treatments of adrenal disease.

The Challenge

We would like professional help to help us establish a plan to recruit and sustain a governing board of directors and volunteers who are passionate about helping those affected by adrenal disease.

The Project: Volunteer Program Planning

Estimated Volunteer Time (Now – April 30): 31-33 hours

See Scope of Work / Project Steps Show

End Result

The project will result in the following deliverables:

  • A 1-2 page assessment summary highlighting areas of strength and weakness in the organization’s current volunteer recruitment and retention strategies.
  • A 3 year Volunteer Program Plan / timeline.
  • Volunteer job descriptions or updates to existing job descriptions, profiles, and outreach plan and messaging for up to 5 top volunteer needs.

Impact

This project would be a complete game changer for us! This would help us as an organization to re-establish ourselves within the community and increase our impact across the state. A governing board and volunteer base committed to helping shape and driving forward our mission would do wonders for us. This would help us to raise awareness of Addison’s disease and our mission, raise more money for research, and ultimately have a greater impact across the state.

The application for this project is now closed, if you are interested in taking on this project or something like it, contact volunteer@activategood.org for more information.

Volunteer Program Planning for A Helping Hand

helping hand

The Cause

A Helping Hand is a nonprofit organization committed to assisting older adults in maintain independence and quality of life. Cathy Ahrendsen founded A Helping Hand in 1995 in response to an unmet community need for high caliber senior support services. Today, the agency remains committed to her vision of helping senior citizens and individuals with disabilities safely “age in place” while maintaining the highest level of independence. We serve people of all income levels in Orange, Durham, Chatham, and western Wake counties, regardless of their ability to pay.

The Challenge

As with most nonprofits, volunteers provide a tremendous benefit. We find that the nature of our work, asking individuals to interact with a senior in their home for up to 3 hours, is more intensive than many other volunteer opportunities. We would love to be able to find a way to properly communicate our need to volunteers and to retain them. We would like for a consultant to help us pinpoint the places in our volunteer program where we can work on retention and building a volunteer culture that is generative.

The Project: Volunteer Program Planning

Estimated Volunteer Time (Now through April 30):

31-36 hours

See Scope of Work / Project Steps Show

End Result

The project will result in the following deliverables:

  • A 1-2 page assessment summary highlighting areas of strength and weakness in the organization’s current volunteer recruitment and retention strategies.
  • A 2 year Strategic Action Plan / timeline that includes, at minimum, strategies / a plan for volunteer appreciation / retention.
  • Volunteer job descriptions or updates to existing job descriptions, profiles, and outreach plan and messaging for up to 5 top volunteer needs.

Impact

This project would have a significant impact on our ability to serve the community/clients. As our program depends on volunteers, this would have a tremendous impact on our ability to serve more seniors. In Durham in particular, there is more need than we have volunteers. Volunteers also translate into donors and informed advocates in the community, not only for our agency but for aging issues in the community. The bottom line of our mission is to serve seniors. By gaining a larger, more loyal and more sustainable base of volunteers, we would be able to do expand our services.
