Serving Up Spring pop-up brunch on March 30 will fuel service learning for 6 classrooms

When I was in high school, I had an itch I couldn’t quite scratch. Inside there was a fire burning, a voice urging me to go out and make a big difference, but I lacked a deeper understanding of the issues in my community. And, I lacked guidance on how to tackle those issues. Ever ask yourself what you’d change about your high school experience if you had the chance? If there had been a service learning elective at my school that would enable me to study important community issues in-depth, identify causes to engage with, and help me hone my personal leadership skills, I would have jumped at the chance to enroll. As it happened, I had neither the opportunity nor the awareness to start learning these things until after high school. I┬ácan only imagine how my life would be different if I’d had that chance, if I’d learned these vital things as a teenager; if I’d have gotten involved earlier and made progress on more issues that are important to me. Through Activate Good‘s Activate Schools program, I now have a chance to give other students — other teens with fires in their bellies — the opportunity and guidance to learn these things, to start putting their passion and energy into something they’ll be extremely proud of. A lot of the time, these are kids that wouldn’t be given the opportunity to lead or told they have any kind of power to make a difference. Showing kids they CAN lead and CAN make an impact is life-changing. It was for me. Throughout the Leadership & Service curriculum...

Congratulations to Mr. Bongo!

Activate Good would like to announce that Mr. Bongo, victorious in the contested election against the valiant Toby the Dog, will be Activate Good’s official mascot. For those following the horse race journalism of gorilla versus canine, Toby took an early impressive lead in the donation count, but Bongo stormed back after hiring vaunted campaign adviser James Congoville, the ragin’ Ebola contagion. Both Toby and Bongo would like to thank the many, many generous donors to the election – an election where money-in-politics was highly encouraged. All donations were matched by the wonderful A.J. Fletcher Foundation, which continues to be a prime supporter of Activate Good, as Activate Good continues to support over 150 charitable causes in the local community and service learning in the...

Vote for Activate Good’s mascot: Toby vs. Mr. Bongo

MAS-COT | noun a person, animal, or object adopted by a group as a symbolic figure especially to bring them good luck. Throughout history, mascots have inspired greatness. They have brought their teams to victory, or comforted people in times of loss or defeat. They have evoked strength, warmed our hearts, and yes, even made us laugh. Every cause must have an icon, a figurehead, a symbol of do-gooders the world over. This summer, Activate Good launches the search for one such mascot. Activate Good’s mascot must have pep. Our mascot must be a noble, charitable creature. And lo, our mascot must inspire the masses to do good. So who will it be? Meet our candidates: Mr. Bongo, the outspoken and jovial gorilla who taught us that anybody – even the hairiest of us – can do good. Toby, the witty dog with a big heart and a bone to pick… against apathy. Help us choose Activate Good’s mascot. Every dollar is a vote! Cast a vote with a donation of any amount until August, and the AJ Fletcher Foundation will match your donation-vote dollar for dollar. The candidate to inspire the most giving will win a place at Activate Good – and in the hearts of all volunteers! – as a beloved mascot. Hear from our mascots’...
Triangle Christmas Tree Challenge!

Triangle Christmas Tree Challenge!

Activate Good kicked off the holiday season this year by showcasing volunteerism during the Triangle Christmas Tree Challenge! During the Challenge, which runs from December 7 through December 20, over 60 charities from around the Triangle display trees with decorations inspired by their organization’s mission to garner votes for the chance to win a cash prize to support their work. Our own tree decorations consisted of ornaments featuring some of the wonderful volunteers we’ve worked with. We’ve been highlighting these ornaments and the stories of the volunteers they feature on our Facebook page this week. Help us take home a prize up to $5,000 by voting for our tree (number 65) online, or text “Tree65” to 46988! Check out our Triangle Christmas Tree Challenge video: Check out a few of our featured ornaments:        ...

80’s Flashback!

This month, the Activate Good crew will take you back to another time. A time of innocence. And dancing. And tacky, tacky clothes. That’s right: The 1980s. We’re teaming up with Live Work Play – Raleigh for the ultimate 80s Night at Spy Raleigh on Thursday, March 1. From now until March 1, help us reach our spring fundraising goal of $1,500 this month and we’ll be the tackiest dudes and dudettes at the dance. Give $5, $25, $50 – Whatever you can. The more we raise, the tackier we’ll be, for the amusement of all. How tacky, you ask? Check out our spring fundraising page for a taste of what we’ll wear to entertain you (and to raise funds to support Activate Good!). Then, on March 1, we welcome you to join us at Spy Raleigh to see just how outrageously you’ve dressed our...
