Details:

The work day will focus on preparation for the spring planting, including weeding raised beds and filling with additional garden soil and compost. Help is also needed for planting fruit trees, installing a teepee for productive vines, planting a vertical strawberry bed, and weeding and mulching around existing fruit trees and shrubs.

Beginning and Beyond Child Development Center serves 102 children in downtown Raleigh, NC. As a demonstration center with the Preventing Obesity by Design (POD) Wake County Program, they have a goal to create an active and productive outdoor learning environment. They have made much progress towards this goal, installing a fenced-in learning garden that features raised beds, a compost area, storage shed, water source, gazebo, and arbor. They have also installed permanent edibles including apple, pear, and plum trees, and blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and muscadines. Children enjoy planting, tending, and harvesting fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs that provide a source of fresh, local produce for the center's meals and snacks.
