Mentor for Young Parents who were in Foster Care

What You'll Do:

To provide social and practical support around best-parenting practices for a young parent (18-26) who have been involved in the foster care system.

Mentor Responsibilities
• Serve as a positive role model, resource and guide in regards to parenting needs
• Build the relationship by planning and participation in activities together
• Strive for mutual respect and build confidence and motivation
• Make recommendations related to community-based services that would be appropriate for the family
• Work with agency staff through emails, phone calls, personal conferences, and group meetings to help set goals and work towards accomplishing them
• Conduct at least one visit in the mentee’s home, with understanding home visiting is encouraged
• Accept and relate to young adult parents who may not share the volunteer’s lifestyle and values
• Respect the mentee’s right to self-determination and independence
• Have fun

• Training/experience in child development, early childhood education and non-violent positive-parenting techniques are a plus!
