What You'll Do:

Freedom United, the world’s largest community dedicated to ending human trafficking and modern slavery, is seeking a new Board Member with professional experience in either legal, advocacy, or fundraising.

Board terms last for two (2) years and board members can serve for up to three consecutive terms.



The Freedom United Board of Directors is composed of leaders from the nonprofit and for-profit sector. Serving on Freedom United’s Board of Directors is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about the organization’s mission and has the experience to help strengthen the leadership, governance and effectiveness of the organization.

Board members are expected to:

-have financial acumen to read and understand Freedom United’s financial statements and otherwise help the board fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities.

-attend four board meetings per year (minimum one (1) in person.) They are expected to read board materials in advance of board meetings and come prepared to ask questions and participate in discussions.

-serve on one or more committees of the board and to actively participate in committee work.

-play an active role in securing the financial resources necessary for Freedom United to achieve its mission. Board members are expected to leverage personal relationships and connections to help the development committee and staff identify and solicit potential funders, as well as directly invest in Freedom United’s work by making a personal contribution each year.

-act exclusively for the benefit of Freedom United and its mission, including responsibly represent Freedom United to their respective networks and to advocate for the organization’s mission, programs, and services as appropriate.

Desired Skills and Expertise:
We are currently recruiting for diverse leaders with expertise in the following area:

Legal Professional with expertise in corporate law and legal transactions. We seek a leader to provide legal guidance and assist board and staff with understanding the legal implications of Freedom United’s activities and ensuring that the board understands relevant legal issues as a part of strategic planning and decision making. The ideal candidate will also provide guidance on issues such as contract and policy creation and review, risk management, intellectual property issues, and when outside legal counsel might be necessary. This individual must have prior nonprofit board member experience or a board training certificate.

Advocacy Professional who has planned and implemented advocacy strategies and campaigns to support an issue or cause. We seek a board leader to help cultivate the board’s leadership role in advocacy, and in support of our staff as part of a broader commitment to increase awareness about the importance of our mission, influence public policy, and expand our reach. The ideal board candidate should have prior nonprofit leadership or board experience.

Fundraising Professional with experience in fundraising or major gifts development. We seek a leader who can help the current board and staff with developing a sustainable fundraising plan, including striking the right balance between nurturing millions of ongoing advocates (primarily through Facebook) to become financial sustainers and the renewal/development of major gift donors (individuals & corporations.) The ideal board candidate should have prior nonprofit leadership or board experience.
