Details:

Volunteers walk next to our riders as they complete their weekly therapeutic horseback riding lesson. Our lessons are scattered throughout the week. Lessons take place outdoors at the farm and volunteers should be prepared to walk for either 30 minutes to an hour (depending on the length of the lesson) with short stretches of jogging. Volunteers must wear closed toe shoes while volunteering for safety around the horses. The riders need varying levels of support - from just walking beside them to supporting them in the saddle. We recommend side-walkers be at least 14 years old due to the physical demands of side-walking. We try our best to pair our riders with a team that they can learn and grow with - for that reason, we do ask for a weekly commitment from our volunteers. No horse experience is necessary, but volunteers must be comfortable around horses and working with persons with disabilities.

Riding in our program allows those with physical and mental disabilities a chance to be outdoors and participate in a sport. The relationship they develop with our horses and volunteers has a life-changing effect on them. We have had non-verbal riders say their first words in our lessons. We have riders who were told they would never walk independently take their first steps because they built up the necessary core strength riding a horse. You will also be amazed at what you get out of volunteering and seeing our riders make improvements from week to week.
