What You'll Do:Seeking college students to help facilitate a Youth Caucus for local high school students on February 10 at the McKimmon Center to educate and empower them to become voters.
Must be 18 years or older
Details:At the Youth Caucus, local high school students will receive a quick presentation on NC elections and participate in a facilitated discussion on voting followed by a voting simulation. The goal of this program is to prepare students to successfully cast their ballot in a real election by giving them information they need about the mechanics of voting along with a memorable experience to lock in that information. We also want to engage students on how offices on the ballot in 2022 connect to issues they care about -- that's where you come in!
We are looking for college student volunteers to facilitate small group discussions with the high school student participants. Topics may include the volunteer's own experience registering to vote or voting, issues that young people care about, and offices on the 2022 ballot. NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED! All volunteers must attend a Zoom training prior to the program at which they will receive all the information they need, and YCV staff will be on hand to answer any difficult questions that come up during the event. While sharing your own voting experiences is not required, it can be a great way to show high school students how someone close to their own age navigated this complex process. Even if you had trouble and missed an election, your experience can help give younger students the confidence to vote or register and show them they don't need to know everything!
Volunteers must agree to follow YCV's nonpartisan policies and COVID guidelines. Volunteers must attend a Zoom training in advance of the event. Zoom trainings will be offered on these dates:
- Monday, February 7, 5:30 - 6:30 pm
- Tuesday, February 8, 10:30am - 11:30am
- Tuesday, February 8, 5:30 - 6:30 pm
You Can Vote is a 501(c)(3) nonpartisan non-profit organization. Please sign up here if you are interested; we'll send you more thorough interest form where you can indicate what training date you will attend. Please reach out to Jenn (email@example.com) with any questions.
Impact Statement:Research shows that it's not apathy that keeps young people from voting when they turn 18; rather, it's the logistical difficulties that face first-time voters. You can empower teens to overcome those hurdles.
